Newtown was originally part of Philadelphia County but became part of Bucks County in 1705. One of the most noted former residents of Newtown was painter Edward Hicks (1780–1849). He lived in Newtown for over forty years with his family, where he was able to own his own business. The Garden of Reflection 9-11 Memorial was established to remember and honor the loved ones we lost on September 11, 2001. It is located in Lower Makefield Township's Memorial Park among the natural beauty of Historical Bucks County farmland. The Yardley architect Liuba Lashchyk AIA designed this memorial, which invites us on a walking Memorial Journey symbolizing "After Darkness...Light." This journey from sad reminders of calamity and sorrow leads towards bright symbols of hope, peace, and celebration of life. The Garden is intended as a physical memento for all who died as well as an acknowledgment to the 18 individuals killed in Bucks County. Within 62 acres of Memorial Park, the garden occupies 19 acres. This garden is a living memorial, with a variety of plantings; trees, shrubs, flowers and grasses to create a peaceful environment for contemplation and reflection. The grounds include all 2,973 victims' names etched in glass and twin lighted fountains. This memorial is open to public throughout the year and serves as a reminder of the fragility of life, so that we can remain forever vigilant against those who would seek to weaken our nation .The Garden of Reflection 9-11 Memorial is a powerful reminder that we must never forget.
