Doylestown's November Runs Through State and Main, Gas Main and All

  • November 5, 2026

Doylestown's holiday season is put up by hand. Volunteers hang the lights. Cyclists fill the pantry bins one grocery bag at a time. The tree lighting is in its 112th year and still depends on people who sign up to help. This November, all of that happens around the same few blocks of State and Main, where PECO has been laying a new gas main since August.

The work has a scheduled end date of Friday, December 4. That means downtown's busiest stretch of the year, from the first strand of lights to Santa's arrival, runs on the same calendar as a utility project that is still underway. Here is the month in order, and how each date relates to the work under the street.

What Is Happening Under the Pavement

PennDOT announced on July 29 that PECO would close and detour State Street and Main Street one section at a time, starting August 4 and running through December 4. In September, Patch reported that the project is a new PECO gas main along those sections. Work runs in two daily windows, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. That leaves the 3 to 6 p.m. stretch open, and puts much of the heavy work overnight.

The four segments and their posted detours:

  • State Street, Clinton to Hamilton: detour via Court and Hamilton
  • State Street, Hamilton to Main: detour via Clinton, Ashland and Main
  • State Street, Main to Donaldson: detour via Court and Pine
  • Main Street, State to Court: southbound via Court, Clinton and Oakland; northbound via Ashland, Clinton and Court

PennDOT says local access will be kept open at all times, and the schedule depends on the weather. No holiday pause has been announced. So the December 4 end date is the one to plan around, with the usual caveat that rain days can push it.

All four segments meet at or near the intersection of State and Main, the same corner where the tree was lit last year.

Sunday, November 8: The Grocery Run on Two Wheels

The month starts a few blocks from the work zone. The 14th Annual Bucks County Cranksgiving, presented by Bike Works, sets off from Broad Commons Park at 10 Doyle Street on Sunday, November 8. Day-of registration runs 8:45 to 9:30 a.m., and the ride starts at 9:30.

The format is simple. Riders bring $25 to $100 of their own money, ride a set route to grocery stores, buy nonperishable food, and drop it in bins headed for the Bucks County Housing Group food pantries. Registration is free. According to the event's BikeReg page, the stops are the Doylestown Acme at 480 N. Main Street and Super Fresh by McCaffrey's at 200 W. State Street, and parking is in the County of Bucks garage at Broad and Union. Bike Works gives the route as 8.4 miles. The BikeReg listing calls it an 8-mile loop in one place and a 10-mile loop in another, so plan for something in that range.

Super Fresh sits on West State, the street PECO has been working on since summer. On Cranksgiving morning, the first holiday-season traffic downtown sees is a line of bicycles carrying canned goods down the corridor that has spent three months behind detour signs.

November 9 Through 14: One Castle Closes, the Lights Go Up

The following week, the borough's two best-known holiday displays trade places.

Fonthill Castle closes November 9 through 13 while staff set up for the holidays. Daily holiday tours then begin November 14 and run through December 22. The holiday evening tours start Wednesday, November 18, and Thursday, November 19. Those mid-week evening dates are the early chance to see Henry Mercer's concrete castle decorated, before the Thanksgiving weekend crowds.

On Saturday, November 14, the day Fonthill reopens, Discover Doylestown holds Decorate the Town, an 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. call for volunteers to hang the borough's lights. Volunteers meet at the Discover Doylestown address, 63 E. State Street. The lights strung over State Street that morning will go up over a street still under active utility work, and they will be lit while that work is still scheduled to continue.

November 21: The Market's Last Saturday

The outdoor Doylestown Farmers Market runs Saturdays through November 21, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., on South Hamilton Street between West Oakland Avenue and West State Street, according to Patch's November events guide.

The 21st is the last weekend before Thanksgiving, which makes it the final outdoor market before the holiday table. The market also reaches up to West State Street, a block west of where the Clinton-to-Hamilton work segment begins. Six days later, the same block of Hamilton becomes the address for Santa.

Friday, November 27: The Corner Gets Its Night

Discover Doylestown's 112th Annual Tree Lighting runs from 5 to 8 p.m. on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Guest emcee Richard Curtis will welcome Santa, Mrs. Claus, and what the organizers describe as guests "flying in from the land of Oz." Doylestown DART will run free shuttles from the parking garage to the ceremony starting at 5 p.m.

The shuttle matters more this year than most. With the gas main work scheduled into December, the free ride from the garage spares people from hunting for curb space in blocks that have had shifting closures since August.

Here is how the day lays out:

  1. 10 a.m., County Theater, 20 E. State Street. The $5 Family Matinee Series shows The Grinch.
  2. 5 p.m. DART shuttles start running and the tree lighting program begins.
  3. After Santa arrives. Santa's Cottage opens at the Hamilton Lot, 34 W. State Street, for its run through December 24. Photos with Santa are free, donations are welcome, pets are allowed, and visitors bring their own phone or camera.

Discover Doylestown's current Winterfest listing gives parade participants as "TBA" and does not include a 2026 route or parking plan. The 2025 event is a reference point only. Patch reported last year that the tree stood at State and Main and that Santa was raised over the intersection in a bucket truck before it was lit. In 2025, Santa traveled east on West State from Clinton to Main, while the rest of the parade continued east to Pine. Parking was banned on both sides of State from Pine to Hamilton and on Main from West Court to Oakland, from 3 p.m. until about 8:30 p.m., according to Patch. Those were last year's arrangements. The 2026 plan will come from Discover Doylestown, and their page is the one to check in the days before.

Last year's route, State from Clinton east past Main, matches almost exactly the sections listed in PennDOT's notice. The parade route and the gas main follow the same line, which is why that corner keeps coming up.

Saturday, November 28, and the Days After

Small Business Saturday runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on November 28, and Patch's November guide places it in downtown Doylestown. The County Theater shows Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer that morning at 10 and The Grinch again on Sunday, November 29, both in the $5 matinee series.

Grande Pizza & Catering is one of the newer storefronts on the shop-local map. It opened in August at 276 S. Main Street, a few days after Lil' Doms closed at that address, and Patch covered its October 5 grand-opening promotion. It is just south of the work zone and an easy stop between the matinee and the shops.

Out on Route 611, the Other Construction Site

The borough is decorating around one construction project, and the township has a different one going. By October 8, Patch reported that work was underway on the Barn Plaza extension in Doylestown Township: three new buildings totaling 43,000 square feet on the former Regal Cinema site. The named tenants include Pottery Barn, Williams-Sonoma, Sephora, Burton's Grill & Bar, Shake Shack, Naya, Starbucks, Just Salad and LaserAway.

Patch's October report listed the tenants without opening dates. The new retail at Barn Plaza will arrive on its own timeline. The holiday calendar on State Street arrives on fixed dates, put together by Discover Doylestown, Bike Works, the Mercer Museum staff at Fonthill, the County Theater and the volunteers who show up on November 14.

PECO's work on State and Main is scheduled to end on Friday, December 4, three weeks after Decorate the Town and one week after the tree lighting, weather permitting.

If a season like this one has you thinking about which blocks of Doylestown you would like to call home, Caryn and Brooke at B&B Luxury Properties know the borough as well as anyone who lives there, down to the side streets that stay quiet on parade night.
