Anguilla: A Caribbean Gem That Captured Our Hearts

#bandbontheground

When we first set foot on Anguilla's pristine shores in the year 2000, little did we know that this serendipitous visit would blossom into a decades-long love affair with this enchanting Caribbean island. Our journey to Anguilla began unexpectedly, following a less-than-ideal experience in Turks and Caicos. Thanks to our astute travel agent, Amy from Coral Reef Travel in Manhasset, New York, we found ourselves whisked away to what would become our second home.

A Fortuitous Beginning

With our daughter Brooke Black just five months old, we arrived at Cap Juluca, instantly captivated by Anguilla's unspoiled beauty and laid-back charm. The powdery white sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and warm hospitality of the Anguillian people immediately set this island apart from any other Caribbean destination we had experienced.

Anguilla's Rich History

To truly appreciate Anguilla, one must delve into its fascinating history. This small British Overseas Territory, measuring just 16 miles long and 3 miles wide, has a story that spans centuries.

• Pre-Columbian Era: Arawak-speaking Amerindians from South America were the island's first inhabitants, leaving behind artifacts and cave drawings that offer glimpses into their ancient culture.

• Colonial Period: Christopher Columbus sighted Anguilla in 1493, but it wasn't until the mid-17th century that English settlers from St. Kitts established the first European colony. The island's name, derived from the Italian word for "eel," reflects its long, narrow shape.

• Path to Autonomy: Anguilla's journey to self-governance was marked by determination. In 1967, the island unilaterally declared independence from the federation of Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla, culminating in a brief revolution in 1969. By 1980, Anguilla had achieved status as a separate British dependent territory.

Culinary Paradise

One cannot discuss Anguilla without celebrating its incredible food scene. The island's culinary landscape is a testament to its rich cultural heritage and bountiful marine resources.

• Fresh Seafood: From grilled crayfish at beachside shacks to elegant lobster dinners at high-end restaurants, Anguilla's seafood is unparalleled.

• Local Specialties: Don't miss trying the national dish, pigeon peas and rice, or savoring johnny cakes, a staple of Anguillian cuisine.

• Fine Dining: World-class restaurants like Jacala, Veya, and Blanchard's offer innovative menus that blend local flavors with international techniques.

• Beach Bars: The island's beach bars, like Elvis' Beach Bar and Dune Preserve, serve up delicious food alongside stunning ocean views and live music.

What Makes Anguilla Special

After 26 years of visits, we can confidently say that Anguilla's allure goes far beyond its physical beauty:

  1. Unspoiled Beaches: With 33 beaches, each more stunning than the last, Anguilla offers a beach for every mood and occasion.

  2. Warm, Welcoming People: The genuine friendliness of Anguillians makes visitors feel like part of the community.

  3. Lack of Commercialization: Unlike many Caribbean destinations, Anguilla has maintained its authentic charm, with no high-rise hotels or cruise ship ports.

  4. Safety and Tranquility: The island's low crime rate and peaceful atmosphere make it an ideal escape from the stresses of everyday life.

  5. Rich Culture: From boat racing (the national sport) to lively festivals, Anguilla's cultural heritage is vibrant and accessible.

  6. Luxury Accommodations: From boutique hotels to lavish villas, Anguilla offers world-class lodging options without feeling overcrowded.

  7. Water Activities: Whether it's snorkeling, kayaking, or sailing to nearby cays, the azure waters around Anguilla offer endless adventure.
